What is your search engine ranking? Not sure what this means? If you run an internet site, then you need to know all about search engine placement. While it might not be a good idea to try and gain this kind of placement on your own, it certainly helps to know all about it. To put it quite simply, SEO placement refers to the way that a search engine “sees” your page. Can a search engine actually recognize your site? In so many ways, search engines have a language of their own that can only be understood with the right marketing plan in place.

In order to communicate with a search engine, you must understand what that search engine is looking for. You see, these engines seek sites that are of great importance where various keywords are concerned. When an internet user types a keyword into a search engine, that engine will look for sites that directly relate to the keyword used. These engines rate each site according to relevance, and also according to quality. Those sites that are weighted the best generally wind up towards the top of the search page. This is, basically, search engine ranking.

How can you get your site to the top of a search page? Well, this is the tricky part. The best way to go about achieving a high search engine ranking is to hire a competent internet marketing team. These companies solely focus upon placing sites within the top five hits of any search engine. However, reaching the top five spots is not enough. You must also stay within the top five for a number of years in order to really get your business going. How can this be achieved? The company that you choose to market your site must be willing to keep your site up to date every single day.

This can be done with the help of various marketing tactics such as real-time updates, constantly changing keywords, and other monitoring skills. SEO Tools like SEOintelligence keep their clients on top of the search engine ranking system by ensuring that their clients never lost those top spots. If a company cannot do this for your site, then it’s best to look for one that can. You can learn a lot about search engine placement on your own, but let advertising experts handle this subject. This way, you can simply focus upon running your business.

If you treat your internet business as you would treat a brick and mortar business, search engine rankings become increasingly important. Would it make any sense to set up a business in a ghost town that doesn’t have any roads? Just as this doesn’t compute, neither does ignoring your search engine rank position. Think of a search engine as a kind of road that will lead internet users to various shops that are set up all over the internet. The more that you advertise along that road, the more you can expect an increase in the number of clients you service each day.

What are search engine rankings? Essentially, these numbers refer to the position that your site gains when someone searches for a business similar to the one that you run. Search engines rank each site according to the key words that the site contains, the important of the site itself, and the relevance of the site to the keyword that was originally search for. Search engines will weight each quality link placing only those top links within the first five positions. Since most people only look at the top five spots, these coveted spots are important to internet business success.

The important thing to remember is that any site can enjoy a top five spot for awhile, but only those sites that are marketed well can enjoy this position for many years to come. Thus, finding an excellent internet marketing company is the only way that you can ensure your site will last. Top internet marketers will employ all kinds of tactics to make sure that your site stays where it should be – within the top five spots. Our SEO toolset was designed because search engine rankings are so extremely important to the success of any internet business.

Make sure that you research the internet marketing company that you choose. Some of them promise the moon, but only deliver falling starts. Others promise one thing, but they cannot combine that one thing with many other important internet marketing tactics. Look for a company that will give you a complete marketing package. How important are search engine rankings? Well, how important is your site? If you prize your site, love your business, and want to reach more customers, then it’s worth investing in a great internet marketing company. Otherwise, you may as well set up your business in a ghost town with no roads.

Anyone with a Web site is looking for ways to improve search engine rankings. There have been many tactics used to do this, but it can get difficult and confusing keeping up with all of them. If you worked on every single technique you came across, your site would end up suffering because the right attention wasn’t paid to it. By spending more time on one or two search engine techniques, they will be able to be done better, which will increase your desired results. One of the most tried and true ways to increase rankings is with linking.

Link building is a great way to improve search engine rankings because you will be bringing in the traffic you wanted but didn’t know how to find. By linking your site to a related site has the potential to double your traffic. That site’s readers could be looking for exactly what your site offers, but they didn’t know where to find it. By linking there, you will tap into an entire targeted audience. Many search engines calculate the number of links your site has so it is important to build quality links. In order for this to be beneficial, you have to investigate the sites before you link to them. Search engines use sophisticated calculations, so any old link on any old site won’t cut it.

Link building in order to improve search engine rankings doesn’t mean that you have to spend all day looking for potential link sites. You do have to take your time and be selective. Having links to relevant sites not only will be appreciated by your readers, but the search engines as well. Because search engines are able to measure the quality of links, the tactic of linking to every site you can find won’t work. It will take work finding the right sites for linking, but the results will be worth it. You will see noticeable results in your rankings, so you shouldn’t mind spending some time finding these sites.

The more high quality links you have to your site is one of the best ways to improve search engine rankings. Linking is one of the ways in which search engines formulate their rankings. If you looking for ways to improve your rankings, then using links could be the answer for which you are looking. By focusing on one aspect of search rankings, you’ll be able to complete it better. This will make your results better.

Google, Yahoo and MSN are the top search engines but each uses vastly different criteria to compute algorithms and relevancy. What you do to rank well on one of these search engines may lead you to lose your ranking on another. Important factors that you can use to compare and contrast how these top search engines will judge your site include content and query processing.

Which is King – Quality Content or Keywords?

Yahoo tends to lean towards commerce-related sites more so than informational sites and has a paid-inclusion program that allows even newer websites to appear at the top of search engine results. To rank well with Yahoo, it helps to have very descriptive and keyword-rich content and titles for each page. The same goes for MSN search, which places high value on descriptive content.

However, MSN search currently drives little traffic so any website owner’s goal should be to rank with Google and Yahoo first and foremost. To rank with Google, long-term efforts to improve organic ranking are your best bet while more aggressive SEO tactics fare better with Yahoo and MSN. Google is a bit trickier when it comes to ranking your website based on content. If your website is obviously targeting a particular keyword phrase, such as when that particular keyword phrase is used in internal links, inbound links, the page title, etc., Google may omit your website from search results for that particular keyword.

If you want to successfully rank on Google, you must make the content on your website appear as natural as possible. Avoid overuse of keyword phrases and make your content newsy and informational. Disperse semantically related text throughout the content on your website and be frugal with keywords if you want your website to have a better chance of ranking on Google.

Query Processing – Text vs. Concept

Yahoo places a lot of importance on the text of your website. If you search for a particular keyword phrase, you will notice that the top search engine rankings on Yahoo have the exact same phrase in the title. Even common words of lesser importance such as “how to” will show up in the text of the page titles. Yahoo values even such commonly used phrases, making them important to use in your page titles and text if you want to rank on Yahoo.

On the other hand, Google places little importance on common words and phrases and instead judges a page based on its educational value. In sum, Google values concept over text. If your website has a lot of informational content it is more likely to rank on Google, which judges content based on its meaning rather than merely taking it for its literal value. MSN is also better than Yahoo in this regard but it still pales in comparison to Google.

So there you have it. Query processing and content are just a couple of the important factors top search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN judge when ranking websites. Keep these points in mind when creating content and titles for your website’s pages because your actions will have varying results from search engine to search engine. Decide which search engine you want to focus on ranking for and alter your approach based on that decision.

SEO or Search Engine Optimization can hardly be defined as a simple or easy practice. No wonder, SEO professionals, claiming to be experts, are raking in the moolah by using sub standard practices and unfair means to achieve higher rankings for websites on search engines.

A complicated as well as an in-depth process, SEO requires plenty of experience, understanding and comprehension of the very core factors that drive the process. A dynamically changing industry, keeping up with the latest trends in SEO can be overwhelming. Which is why, I have compiled a list of SEO best practice for you all. You must remember to treat these as a general guideline and not a complete or comprehensive listing.
NOTE: When talking about SEO, it is incorrect to assume that your site’s ranking on search engines will automatically improve without the need to make changes to your website. Beware of any SEO firm that lays claim to the fact that they can make your website perform better without any modifications!

I am merely listing down the best practices in SEO in a straightforward manner so that you can derive your own meaning based on your requirements and essentials. Let’s get started:

Come Up With An Eye-Catching Title for Your Content Page or Copy or Post
• If you already have a brand, use it in the title tag. Using a branded title tag can be a powerful SEO technique.
• Keep the length of your titles to a minimum of 20 characters and a maximum of 65 characters, including spaces. A longer than 65 characters title has lower chances of being index properly by search engines. It also means wastage of space.
• Since, content is king with SEO, it becomes vital for you to include the valuable keyword (s) in the title of your page or post. You are likely to get better results in searches if you include your primary keywords in the page’s title as well as subtitles.
• Something that you must always remember is to think like a common internet searcher when you work on a title. Take time to compose the best title and bear in mind the search terms your visitors are most likely to use to find your website.
• Use the primary keyword in the heading of the page. This becomes the main headline of your page on the search engines’ indexes.
Come Up With The Best Meta Description For Your Content Page or Copy or Post
• Be honest with your content. Never use a misleading Meta description, as it can damage your website traffic from search engines in the long run.
• The Meta description should not be longer than 160 characters and must be descriptive in style.
Create the Best URL / Permalink
• A URL structure that includes the title of your page and describes your content will help increase targeted traffic to your website.
• KISS. Keep it short and simple, as far as URLs are concerned. Long urls must be avoided.
• Try to use descriptions rather than numbers. Keywords are much more effective than numbers.

These SEO best practices have been discovered as part of our hundreds of client experience – over many years.

Many webmasters have asked me, ‘How can I generate traffic to my website and boost my rankings on search engines?’ While I make a living from such people, I’d like to share with you a great tool to boost your website traffic as well as rev up your search engine rankings and that is text link ads. A text link ad is a keyword phrase that is hyperlinked to another page. For ex: if you own a website that sells handbags, you can buy a text link ad for ‘handbags’.

Text link ads or text ad links are important aspect of off page optimization and one of the many factors that search engines use to determine the credibility of your website. I am listing down some SEO benefits of text link ads that can help you generate traffic as well as bring in better returns.

The quantity and quality of incoming links to your website is very important. A website that has more incoming links is considered popular by search engines, and therefore, an important website. Back linking is also one of the all important factors that search engines use to determine the ranking of your website on their result pages.
Additionally, you must remember that not every incoming link to your website is important. Only a link that has more incoming links than yours will bear greater weight age than the one with a lower link count.

On the other hand, despite having a text ad link from a website that has a larger count of incoming links, you still may be at a SEO disadvantage. Why? Because websites are typically categorized as good or bad. Bad sites include: free for all sites and link exchange websites, while other sites are good sites and valued more by SEs such as Google.

Text links are also called anchor texts. Defined as a text found inside a link, anchor text looks like this:

<a href=”http://www.yoursiteonly.com/>Text Ad Links</a>

The term Text Ad Links is an anchor text. Anchor text link is important as most people who link to your website would use your website’s keywords to describe your site. An anchor text points to your website and helps SEs determine the keywords your website should be pageranked for.

Now that I have explained about text ad links, you may be curious to know where you can find them. Honestly, there are many ways that you can use to find suitable text ad links for your website. To start with you can directly contact the website owners or the webmasters of the sites you are interested in. While this is a significantly time consuming method, it can also lead to some disappointment unless you have great convincing power!
The other method is to create a resource like feature that draws other webmasters to link to your website. This is not a very effective method and may or may not solicit much response.
The third way to obtain text ad links is to buy them. Yes, an easy but resource driven method, purchasing text ad links allows you to have complete control over the quality of links on your website for long term. Buying text ads increases your chances of being noticed by SEs manifold.
But remember, text ad links are not for all. Use them only if they are part of your long term SEO strategy!

One question that always comes back as a boomerang to haunt most webmasters is, “What really is SEO?” A simple question with plenty of complex answers. Let’s seize this opportunity to decode the holy grail of Search Engine Optimization or SEO.

The Definition
SEO is quite simply a practice (the experts believe it’s a process) of modifying, improving all aspects of your website (internal and external) to direct more traffic (read visitors) from the various search engines. SEO firms are many and varied; some SEO firms focus on specialized areas, while many others have a more general approach towards this process. Moreover, the optimization of your website for the different Mega Search Engines takes into consideration several unique factors that can be loosely classified as website optimization.

Search engine optimization is a discovery of various aspects that have the potential to generate targeted traffic, while ensuring that your website is not just search engine friendly but also well linked and marketed by utilizing the intrinsic offerings of your business.

Want a more complicated jargonized definition of SEO?

The Reason
As a webmaster you may wonder why your website needs SEO at all. Let’s consider this. According to comScore’s study on search engine rankings for America in the year 2008, it’s been found that Google (the big daddy of search engines) is at the top of the list. It commands a market share of 53% alone (an increase of 3% from 50% in September 2007. (Check the graph below). In January 2008 alone, Google received 7.7 billion search queries (Google search – 6.2 billion and YouTube – 1.5 billion).

Almost all the internet traffic is directed by the big search engines namely, Google, Yahoo!, MSN, and AOL, and AskJeeves. The most important way to ensure your website’s success is to… be discovered by the web spiders or the search engines. If your website content doesn’t exists in the databases of these SEs, you simply haven’t arrived and are anonymous, hence, unsuccessful. Irrespective of who or what your website caters to (services, content, products, information etc) search engines are, unarguably, the only method to navigate for a majority of the web users.

Essentially, search engine optimization is a way of making your website attractive enough for SEs to discover it and direct traffic so that they can be converted into potential customers, ensuring success of your venture. Studies have repeatedly proven that search engine driven traffic can make or break your business. Not to be overlooked are facts that targeted traffic also provides free (or paid) publicity, exposure, and (of course) revenue for your company.

The Benefit
As a business owner, website owner, or SEO specialist, you’ll want to work hard to make sure that the big search engines find your site and throw it within the first 20 results for a targeted keyword. Why? Here’s why:
• Google has a market share of 53% – 58% for current year
• Yahoo has 22.9% market share
• Microsoft has 9.8-10% market share
• AskJeeves has 4.6% market share and
• AOL or Time Warner has 4.6% market share as well.

So, in this introductory article on What is SEO, we’ll just like to say – making an investment in SEO (time, money, and sweat) will definitely bring you exceptional return, albeit you need to be patient.
