If you operate any kind of website, you’ll want to pay close attention to the Google page rank that your site receives. What does this ranking system mean? Essentially, Google will rank your site according to its overall importance. Getting your page at the top of this ranking system can be tricky, but companies such as SEO Intelligence can help. How does Google rank each page? Each website is actually assigned a numerical weight of importance. When someone searches for a particular keyword, your site with either pop-up (as relevant to that keyword), or it will not (this happens if your site has not been properly marketed).

A picture of the Page Rank Algorithm is Below:

Clearly, you want your site to be at the top of the Google page rank list, but how is this possible? Through a variety of techniques including keyword placement, internet marketing, and progress tracking, your site will begin to show up at the top of any search. How important is it that your site receives top marks? Well, studies show that consumers are far more likely to click on a site that pops up first during any given search. Why? Some believe that the first hits are the ones that can be trusted, and others simply don’t want to bother looking for those sites that are listed last.

In order to create a website that gains a lot of recognition, you’ll have to employ the services of an internet optimization company that knows what it’s doing. Some companies might claim to get your site at the top of the Google page rank system, but many of these companies cannot deliver on this promise. A great internet marketing company should have various tools that can help your site get to the top, and remain on top for a long time. Only these companies should be trusted with your business.

As soon as you can afford to, make sure to work on that Google page rank. Otherwise, your site may never be seen by anyone. If you think of your site in terms of a mortar and brick shop, this concept will make a lot more sense: who will wander by your shop if there’s no street in front of it? See how important that ranking is? Find an internet optimization company or toolset with proven results, a great track record, and ideas that make sense for your company. As soon as you start driving traffic to your site, you’ll find that your sales will begin to shoot through the roof.

Page ranking is one of the most important aspects of online website visibility, therefore pages that have poor page rank can exclude themselves from getting maximum online exposure/traction. But how does page ranking work? There are some complex algorithms that go into it, but the basic ‘modus operandi’ for page ranking remains quite simple (I will explain in a minute). Basically, there are certain best practices that you need to follow to get a good page ranking on any of the top search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN etc. Let us take a look at some of the best practices.

Best Practices

Keywords: Visibility, search engine optimization, SEM, meta tags, Alt tags, Google Adwords and other forms and strategies of online advertising depend on just one word – the keyword. There are two types of keyword that you can use: primary keyword and secondary keyword. Now for example: if the primary keyword is adventure travel then secondary keywords can be travel cruises, trekking, hiking, mountaineering, river rafting and many more. It will then come down to how well you are able to use your primary and secondary keywords without making your content sound more like a drag. So you need to avoid keyword spamming. You need to place your primary keyword strategically on your website so that the search engines can find them with ease and treat them as the most important words to appear on your website.

Optimizing website content: The factor that drives page ranking is textual content on your web page. You need to hence ensure that your web site should have sufficient text on each of the web pages in order to facilitate proper indexing by various search engines. You need to keep in mind that the text on your web page will not include images or Flash elements. The body copy of a web page should have the correct and most important keyword phrases.

Links from external websites: Page Rank is often increased based on the number as well as quality of links. This means that if your web page is linked to other good or high page ranking websites then it will have a positive affect on the page ranking of your website as well. You can start by sending linking requests to other top ranking websites. This should also be followed by reciprocal linking.

JavaScript navigation: If you are thinking of using JavaScript navigation then you need to reconsider the decision because search engines have difficulty indexing websites using JavaScript based navigation.

Page titles: You need to create appropriate page titles for each of the web pages on your website. A page title is the first line of copy that is displayed during search listing. To attract visitors, you need to apply the right keywords and compelling copy in page titles.

Dynamic URLs: If you are using a dynamic URL then search engines will face difficulty in indexing your web pages. Try to avoid using dynamic URL’s.

Flash content: As of date, search engines are unable to index flash based web pages. So if you need to use flash then limit it to images only and for text, you can use simple HTML. This will serve all your purposes.

You may have heard about TrustRank and yet still not know what it really is. So here’s some information on just what TrustRank is, and what the algorithm is that runs it.

TrustRank is basically a ‘enhanced’ set of link analysis techniques that was first penned/described in a paper by Yahoo! research staff and Stanford University researchers. According to the paper, “TrustRank is used for semi-automatic separation of useful web sites from those that are spam”.

Most ’spam pages’ are created solely with the intention to mislead different search engines and gain rank disingenuously. These spam pages are created mainly for commercial (mainly affiliate) reasons and use different types of SEO and SEM techniques to achieve high rankings on the Top 3 Search Engines or SERPS. Although it is fairly easy for experts to identify spam technically, it is a extremely time consuming and expensive process to manually evaluate each and every page.

One of the most popular methods of improving page rankings on any of the search engines is by artificially increasing the perceived importance of any web document via complex linking tools. Even Google’s PageRank uses similar ways to determine the actual relative importance of any and all web documents that might have been subjected to different types of manipulation.

The TrustRank Algorithm

The TrustRank algorithm is a specific formula used for rating the overall quality of different websites. The TrustRank algorithm was initially published by Gyongyi, Garcia-Molina and Pedersen in 2004. The important idea behind the TrustRank algorithm is quite similar to that of the PageRank algorithm which is, to take the linking structure into account for generating a measure for the type of quality a particular webpage has. This algorithm is considered by many experts as a further development on the existing PageRank algorithm.

The starting point of the TrustRank algorithm lies in the selection of trusted web pages manually. The entire process of trusting pages works on the same lines as in PageRank. The inverse PageRank or negative measure propagates backwards and is the measure for spam or bad pages. For the TrustRank algorithm either of the measures can be taken into account. Here’s the mathematical translation of the TrustRank algorithm:

TrustRank = M-1 * X

Where the matrix M is given by:

M = 1 – d T with

Tij = 1 / Cj (if page j is linking to page i)

Tij = 0 (otherwise)

d is a damping factor and X the source vector of the trust.

The inverse PageRank is given by

Minv-1 * Xinv with

Minv = 1 – dinv Tinv

The inverse transition matrix Tinv is definied by

Tij = 1 / nj (if page i is linking to page j)
Tij = 0 (otherwise)

dinv is again another damping factor while Xinv is considered to be the source vector for the bad or spam pages and nj represents the number of incoming links on page j.

Of course, if you are creating a website then you will not have to worry too much about the TrustRank algorithm. In fact, you can visit http://www.seointelligence.com/ for a Free trial account for implementing strategies which will help in keeping your webpage higher in PageRank and TrustRank.
