MSN Data Integration Complete

live-search-interactive-sdk-logo.jpgWe now have MSN Data in out Dashboard and charting…this was no easy feat. We were excited to see the new API launch last year and now that it has stabilized we decided to integrate it. Also with the talks of a Yahoo/MSN Merger - knowing both technology platforms never hurts.

I really liked the Live Search Interactive SDK Tool it was so sweet to test and play with :)

Thanks MSN - You Rock!

Just got back from SMX in Santa Clara

smx-west-conference-logo.jpgAs you all know I have a Day Job - at LegalZoom.com in Los Angeles. My employer was nice enough to let me attend SMX West in Santa Clara over this past week to further my SEM education (sweet!). It was such a blast - seriously I had a great time, the sessions were great, people fantastic, and location was easy to navigate. Danny Sullivan was awesome, I talked to Shoemoney.com at the Google Groove Party, and also chatted with Neil Patel as well. Honestly it was a great event - I’m super happy Danny left Jupiter/Incisive and started SMX and wanted to personally give him a shout out (great guy, and so knowledgeable!).

Again, very glad that I was able to attend and learn a ton about SEM at the same time. SMX truly is a evolution from SES and 2008 might be the year I DON’T attend a SES in over 5+ years! WOW!

SEOi Going to the Elite Retreat!!!

elite-retreat-logo.jpgI wanted to let everyone know that SEOintelligence.com will be debuting at the Elite Retreat! I have spent a LONG time building this application with my Patner Kyle, but never attended an event with this many SEM/Affiliate heavyweights. To say I am a bit ‘nervous’ is a understatement - the good kind.

Honestly, I really look forward to the opportunity to show the application off and also get feedback from Industry peers that I follow and look up to.

Also wanted to give a shout out to Shoe, Neil, Tigh and all the folks at Elite Retreat who are making the event happen - kudos and thanks.

Quick History Lesson: Google Analytics

In the Spring 2005, Google bought the online web analytics company Urchin (which was founded by two fellow USC alums Brett and Scott Crosby in 1995).

In November 2005, Google revealed a re-packaged version of Urchin, now renamed Google Analytics. The biggest news about Google’s new offering was its price. FREE! The power of Urchin for free? It sounded ludicrous to some, but it was true. Google turned the entire analytics industry on its ear, offering a competitive solution for nothing. Google has since released a new version — Google Analytics 2.0 — that has advanced graphing and upgraded features.

I have used many tools from Omniture, WebTrends, Hitbox (HBX Pro), NetTracker, Harvest Solutions, E.piphany, Urchin — the list goes on and on. And the reality is, Google Analytics is the best ASP/Hosted solution out there (and did I mention - it’s free!). There are some features it lacks, but even if it weren’t free, I’d still say it was the best available option for almost everyone, short of some very specific-needs users.

We use it for PPC and SEO clients of all sizes, from 500 visits a day to 1 million+ and it functions beautifully. If you don’t mind sharing your data with “The Man” (aka: Google), and you’re looking for something that can give you an accurate, sophisticated picture of your site traffic and usage trends, then Google Analytics is the right solution for you.

The idea came from Jeremy Hermanns and Kyle Bunch, two Web Entrepreneurs who have been working together for over 5 years. Kyle and Jeremy needed a SEO toolset that they could use to manage their ever growing set of new projects, and existing ecommerce and web publishing properties. After using a bunch of competing software the two embarked on “one-upping” the industry and developing a superior solution on their own.

Legacy Structures, “Open Doors”, and why they are “Bad”

In my day to day work as a Professional SEO I encounter many issues that affect site ranking - one that I have seen at an ever increasing rate is the elusive ‘open door’ page/link issue. We use this term “open door” internally in reference to any ‘link’ or ‘doorway’ to a obsolete page (series of pages) or worse an entire old site taxonomy.

As websites age they redesign themselves (a necessity), create increasingly more complex ‘database driven’ content schemas (as they grow), change CMS systems (as they go obsolete), we have seen a marked increase in duplicate content penalties, dead link penalties, and growing backlink, error 404 page logs to monitor.

What are/were the SEOi Production Game Plans?

I wanted to post his to outline the SEOintelligence.com game plans and outline. As many of you know I DO have a ‘day-job’ as a Professional SEM/SEO/Online Media Director, so I was lucky enough to work with my Wife to assemble a ‘realistic’ time line and production budget. Knowing I can only work on SEOi on the weekends and at night enabled me to work very well with most of the offshore assets - afterall they were on almost 12hr opposite time schedules. After a lot of planning we figured 12 months was more than enough time (@ 16+- hrs weekly of my time or 2 days of overtime weekly) to develop SEOi. I was able to work one full day every weekend or 1/2 days as my schedule fit, as well as a 1/2 hour here and there nightly during the 5 day work week. As you will see below this flex-scheduling was the ticket for me to have regular work/life balance and also keep the SEOi project moving forward consistently - I am happy to say we are right on schedule!
